The Roman Catholic Church of St. István

The Roman Catholic Church in the centre of Füzér was built in the 13th century in Romanesque style. The present form of its tower and sanctuary was completed in 1808. On the bicentennial of making it more Baroque, on 9 November 2008, the marble tablet commemorating the event was inaugurated in a solemn setting.

The church was built in the 13th century in Romanesque style, dedicated in honour of St István. This is evidenced by the altarpiece of the church, on which King Saint István offers our country for the protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary, with the display of the Holy Royal Crown of Hungary symbolizing the country. On Mary’s arm, we can see the little Jesus. The currently visible oil painting was made in 1875 by Jozef Gubalski, but it can be assumed that the previous altarpiece also represented the offering of our state-founder Holy King’s country, because King István was immortalized on the 19th-century seal of the parish.

During the renovation of the church in 1998, Romanian-era paintings and a Romanian-era door were also revealed. The ceiling paintings of Manó Petrasovszky represent a significant value, which are closely linked to the history of Füzér.
